I was provided a summary of the Martin family history by my great aunt, Eileen. It was created by her sister-in-law, Melba and Melba's source were my great great aunts: Jenny and Rosie.
William Edward Martin was born 5 February 1832 in the Anderson District of South Carolina to Harriet McGhee and John Martin. Great Great Grandpa William Edward Martin had siblings:
- Luella Martin, an adventurer who never married, discovered gold in Mexico
- John Martin, settled in Louisana, was a large land owner
- Tolliver Martin, never married, moved to Memphis, Tennessee, owned a number of warehouses to store cotton, died of TB
- Sarah Martin, sister, married but no other information known
According to the family lore, John Martin was born in Holland and his wife, Harriet McGhee, was born in Dublin, Ireland.
Census Records
1880 Census Record should be in Etowah County, Alabama Unable to find
1880 Agricultural Census Etowah County, Alabama Township 10
Neighbors included:
Sneed, John
Murphree, Morgan
Morton, Marshall
Martin, William, owner,
30 acres tilled, 200 acres woodland, value $700 including land, fences and buildings, $15 value of implements, $140 value of livestock (I am not sure that this is the correct William Martin. There are 2 in Etowah County, Alabama).
1880 Agricultural Census Hale County, Alabama, Beat 12
Wiggins, Jno. W. rents for fixed money, 28 acres tilled, value of farm buildings $200, $60 value of implements, $175 value of livestock
John Wiggins is married to Sarah Frierson, sister of Katherine Ogie Frierson Force Martin. It would appear that this is the Henry Clay Force farm that Peter Evans Force mentions in his Letter from Peter Evans Force (1868-1930) to Uncle Manning F. Force.
