Tolliver Martin - A Wild Goose Chase

My Family | Mom | Eleanor Syers | William Scott Martin | Dad | Lew Wade Ray | Emma Melvina Cook | Contact Me
Other Research | Walter Dudley | Harry Mann

One might imagine that with a name like Tolliver, the research would come easy. But not so!

There are reportedly 2 men that were named Tolliver Martin in my family tree. The first is a brother of my great great great grandfather, John Martin. Supposedly, John settled in Anderson County, SC but his brother Tolliver settled in Virginia and had 10 children.

The 2nd Tolliver Martin to show up in my family tree was the son of the above mentioned John Martin and a brother to my great great grandfather, Willam Edward Martin (b, 1832).

All things considered, I thought I would track down as many men as I could named Tolliver Martin in hopes of finding either of two in my family tree.

I started my wild goose chase by going to Findagrave and found one man listed and now I am working backwards. Please note that I can trace some of my Martin family to Alabama.

I moved on to researching his family tree to see if this might prove fruitful and I found my 2nd Tolliver Martin, uncle of the 1st one.

1900 Smith Station, Lee County, Alabama

Lafayette Martin 65, born Georgia
Frances Martin 70, wife
George Martin 32, born Alabama
Toliver Martin 28 (clearly, this is an uncle to the Tolliver Grandberry Martin that I started this hunt for)
Delpha Hearn 60

Lafayette and Frances were married in 1856. Lafayette was a Confederate Private and served in Georgia. Per Britton & Dobbs Funeral Home Records, 1889-1971 (Patsy Daniel Wright, 2010), p. 22: Lafayette MARTIN, residing at Motts [Lee County], Alabama, died 07 SEP 1900 (age at time of death not given), of consumption (physician Tal MARTIN - evidently his son Toliver); buried 08 SEP 1900 in the family cemetery.

"Historical Atlas Alabama, Volume 2: Cemetery Locations by County," edited by W. Craig Remington (1999), p. 332, indicates that Martin Cemetery in Lee County is an alternative name for Bethel Mission, located in Township 18N, Range 29E, Section 2.
This man served in Company G of the 54th Regiment, Georgia Infantry, CSA.

Skipping a few years, I followed the trail of Lafayette to find this census record. It looks like Lafayette is living with his widowed mother and YES - our 3rd Tolerver Martin!

1850 District 52, Lincoln, Georgia

Name: Syntho Martin (Cynthia Baker Martin, widow of Tolliver Martin) Age: 36 Birth Year: abt 1814 Birthplace: Georgia Home in 1850: District 52, Lincoln, Georgia, USA Gender: Female Syntho Martin 36
Lafayett Martin 15
John Martin 14
Mary Martin 10
Plesant Martin 9
Martha Martin 5
Tolerver Martin 2
Elizebeth Wallace 40

(It turns out that this is Cynthia Baker who was married - you guessed it - the 4th Tolliver Martin in this family.)

I have decided to build a family tree on Ancestry for this group. Who knows, it might help someone! Look for Wild Goose Chase - Martin Family.
