Peter Evans Force was the oldest son of Katherine Ogie Frierson and Henry Clay Force. A number of letters from the Presidental Library of Rutherford B. Hayes exist and paint a picture of this man. Peter was born 5 Dec 1868 in Moundville, Alabama. He was the 2nd child born to this marriage but when Peter was still a young boy, in 1874, his father Henry Clay Force died. Henry's brother and Peter's uncle was the Civil War General for the Union, Manning Force and friend of Rutherford B. Hayes. The Force family was well known and respected in many circles. Peter carried the name of his pateranal grandfather whose historical records and library provided a substainal record and continues to be a part of the Library of Congress.

When Henry Clay Force died, Peter was sent to live with his uncle William Q. Force in Washington DC. It was decided that William could provide a better home and education for young Peter but Peter turned out to be a handful. A number of letters from the library detail parts of his life.
